Iron and Steel Effluent Guideline
Under the Clean Water Act, the Environmental Protection Agency is required to regulate the effluent of all relevant major industries. The Iron and Steel Effluent Standard of 1982 sets restrictions upon the disposal and treatment of pollutants produced by these industries. In 2002, the standard was updated to accommodate new, and improved, wastewater treatment technologies. The agency estimates that the revised standard will reduce the pollutant discharge by hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.
